A Patch of Blue

My hubby had tons of lists of movies that he loves to watch even those movies that were before his time and I'm telling you some of it are still in black and white. And at first I thought black and white??? hmp, that's really and old movie and never care to watch those kind of film knowing I'm not even a movie buff and I always have a prejudices about old movies because there technology back then are not as good as the one that I'm used to but heck why not try to watch one and see for myself. But there are black and white films that I would say that I love to watch and had more morale on the scriptwriting.

Just the other day my hubby introduced me to a movie titled "A Patch of Blue", it's a story about a blind girl Selina who lives with her drunkard ole pa and her mother who is a prostitute who was the reason that she got blinded when she was just 5.

She lead a monotonous life from doing the household chores to beadworks for Mr. Faber to bring some extra income and every now and then Mr. Faber would walk her to the park, later she asked her ole Pa if he can drop her off to the park and pick her on his way back home though at first he was hesitant because he will be home late but she insist that she's been living in the dark already so it wouldn't do much anything to her.

And one sunny afternoon in the park, there’s one black guy name Gordon who befriended to her and later teaches her more to what she was just doing such as how to maneuver around the park, use the phone, Braille and from walking to the park to her apartment and which made a big of a mess cause her mother saw it and she already told her not to make friends with any black people and she got into big trouble that her mom wants to move out on that place with another friend and with that Selina could even bring some extra dough. But she doesn’t like the idea and she run off to Gordon’s for help and indeed he call some school for the blind for her to stay there and learn more than what she is learning though she is already fallen for him but Gordon didn’t take advantage on the situation but rather wanted her to learn more than what he could teach her and whatever happens after a year and see if they still have the same feelings for each other.

I just love this film because Gordon was just a nobleman, on which she is willing to help the naïve Selina on how to face reality and that he still continue to take care of her even after Selina told him that she was raped at one point of her life and never take any advantage on her and that deepens the feeling of Selina towards him.

This is one of many quotes in the movie that touches me.

Selina D'Arcy: I know everything I need to know about you. I love you. [touching Gordon's face]
Selina D'Arcy: I know you're good, and kind. I know you're colored and I...
Gordon Ralfe: What's that?
Selina D'Arcy: ...And I think you're beautiful!
Gordon Ralfe: [smiling] Beautiful? Most people would say the opposite.
Selina D'Arcy: Well that's because they don't know you.

And I would say that this movie really tells a whole lot of how bad the racism back then and how people judge the person by its color though it still happen in this time of age we are in, but still Gordon prove to Selina that love breaks all barriers it may be through physical attribute or through the skin color and indeed they build a bridge for love to flourish between them.
